IBI Biochar Study Tour

The IBI Study Tour is an annual event welcoming biochar industry professionals to gain real-world experience through sightseeing some of the most innovative and versatile biochar projects in host locations across the globe.

The aim of the IBI Study Tour Italy is to show and discuss how biochar increases vineyard production without affecting the grape quality and contributes to mitigate the effect of the climate change, all while increasing the soil fertility in terms of chemical, physical, and biological characteristics.

The Chianti area is a fascinating place, rich with culture, nature, and typical products. The Study Tour will feature vineyards, biochar production systems, and agricultural sites to demonstrate biochar applications and innovation.

October 16 (accommodation in Chianti)

• Learn about technology, market, and new biochar products at RE-CORD.

• Experience a cooperative which brings together 185 associated companies in the Chianti area specialized in the production of olive oil, but also wine and other agricultural products using a gasification system.

• Networking, social dinner, and open time.

October 17 (accommodation in Chianti)

• Visit Felsina Farms and wine cellar with a two-hectare biochar experiment where the National Research Council of Florence is conducting field trials. Learn about innovative technology applications, such as the integration of drones for precision-application in viticulture.

• Visit Badia a Coltibuono, an organic vineyard (an important agricultural company for 1,000 years) that is amended with biochar, while experiencing fine local food and wines.

• Dive into biochar and soil science with scientific researchers on-site by exploring overviews of soil profiles, practicing soil sampling and scanning, and more.

• Social dinner at Badia a Coltibuono and networking.

• Breakfast and return to Florence

The luscious, rolling Chianti hills that straddle the countryside of Florence and Siena, have characterized this area since the beginning of time. The Chianti area consists of the municipalities of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina, otherwise known as the Lega del Chianti (League of Chianti). Founded in 1384 by the Florentine Republic, the League's coat of arms bear the still renowned black rooster. With the creation of the wine-making area in 1932, the Chianti area expanded substantially.

The history of Chianti has always been deeply linked to the wines and other first-rate products, making it the perfect destination for a journey through traditional Tuscan food and wine, and the towns in the area make up the production zone of world-renowned Chianti DOCG red wine. The Sangiovese variety, at the heart of Chianti Classico, stretches over the hills of this territory, leaving space here and there for sheltered towns and villages whose streets emit the aromas of the nearby wine cellars.

Cancellation Deadlines and Refunds:

Cancellations before August 15, 2024:

Participants/Attendees who cancel their registration before August 15, 2024, will receive a 75% refund of the Study tour fee.

Cancellations on or after August 15, 2024:

Participants/Attendees who cancel their registration on or after August 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a refund.
