Hungover and Haunted: Carrie (1976) **PROM NIGHT**
About this Event
“They’re all gonna laugh at you.”
Join Hungover & Haunted on 6th September as we head back to prom night for a screening of Brian De Palma’s 1976 horror classic Carrie, followed by our own slightly less disastrous school dance as we crown the Hungover & Haunted Prom King and Queen.
Adapted from Stephen King’s first published novel, Carrie follows Carrie White, a painfully isolated teenager growing up under the control of her fanatically religious mother. When she’s unexpectedly invited to the school prom, it looks for a moment like Carrie might finally get the normal teenage experience she’s been denied. Unfortunately, this is Carrie, so things don’t stay normal for very long.
What makes Carrie endure is that underneath the telekinesis, blood and full-blown prom-night carnage, it’s an incredibly sad story about humiliation, loneliness and what happens when cruelty is allowed to keep escalating. Sissy Spacek makes Carrie vulnerable enough that even when you know exactly where everything is heading, part of you still desperately wants the night to work out for her.
Nearly fifty years later, Carrie remains one of the defining high-school horror films. It’s melodramatic, nasty, funny, heartbreaking and home to one of the most infamous prom sequences ever put on screen. So naturally, we thought the sensible thing to do afterwards was hold a prom of our own.
Dress accordingly. Campaign shamelessly.
