Want to learn more about hummingbirds, especially those in the Rio Grande Valley?
Hummingbirds are predominantly nectar-feeding birds using their needle-like bills to reach hidden from view nectar. Recently, it has been shown that hummingbird tongues also have a mechanism called “fluid trapping” that complements capillary action. But hummingbirds don’t only drink nectar, they are also known to eat small insects and spiders. John Brush states, “I’ve seen Buff-bellied Hummingbirds helicoptering their way around Texas Ebony trees, picking small items from leaves and spider webs”.
