Howard Alden Quartet.. Tix through Healdsburg Jazz Fest

A guitarist’s guitarist, Howard Alden has been a creative force in jazz for more than four decades. Bay Area audiences got to know him early on when he was a mainstay at Concord Records, recording prolifically with much older masters, such as pianist Dick Hyman, cornetist Ruby Braff and 7-string guitar pioneer George Van Eps, and a brilliant cadre of mainstream swing contemporaries, including reed expert Ken Peplowski, trumpeter Warren Vaché Jr., and trombonist Dan Barrett. Whatever the context, including on the soundtrack to the Woody Allen movie “Sweet Lowdown,” Alden is a consummate improviser hailed for his beautiful touch, commanding sense of swing, and supple phrasing. Jazz’s foremost master of the 7-string guitar, he’s mesmerizing as a solo act, but thrives in the company of players equally committed to close listening and hard grooving. Band members include Patrick Wolff (tenor saxophone), Marcus Shelby (bass), and Sylvia Cuenca (drums).
