This workshop will focus on the muscular system, with emphasis on the back and neck—common areas of strain in ex-racehorses. Participants will learn about the most common muscles and how musculoskeletal issues can influence movement, posture, and behaviour under saddle. This workshop will improve the recognition of early discomfort, aid in preventing long-term musculoskeletal issues, and make retraining more successful
9:30 - 10:45 Session 1 - Foundations "The Muscular System"
In this session we will cover
*Major muscle groups of the horse
*How muscles create movement
*Postural vs locomotor muscles
*Muscle fatigue vs muscle injury
*The back and neck
Morning Tea
11:00 - 12:30 Session 2 - Hands on Muscle Assessment
In this session we will translate the anatomy to what we see externally
*Muscle Illustration
*Safe palpation techniques
*Recognising: Heat, Tension, Asymmetry, Guarding responses
* Differentiating normal vs reactive muscle tissue
Lunch
1pm - 2pm Session 3 - How Muscles Affect Movement
In the final session we will cover how musculoskeletal issues can affect the movement of our OTT horses.
*Normal vs restricted movement
*How muscle pain changes: Stride length, Frame and carriage, Transitions, Behaviour under saddle
*The compensation cycle
*Early warning signs owners often miss
