Former army officer and archaeologist, Dr Andrew Marriott has conducted significant research that challenges the long-held belief that Victoria Crosses are only made from Russian canon captured in the Crimean War.
Using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Dr Marriot has uncovered a much more complex picture showing that different metals were used to make VCs. In this talk, he will show how the myth of a single metal manufacture came about and reveal what he findings suggest about the different sources of metal manufacture and how they can act as a tool to provide provenance and authenticity in the analysis of individual Victoria Crosses.
Dr Andrew Marriott is a retired army officer with over 30 years service. He earned a doctorate from Newcastle University in 2018 focussing on the material culture of the Great War. He went on to be a Visiting Researcher at the university for his Victoria Cross project.
