How to bring the CDC back from the brink

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is at an important juncture, as its leadership seeks to reverse the unprecedented decline CDC has experienced since 2025 in senior leadership, staff, budgets, programs – and public trust. At the same time, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo continues, the largest U.S. measles outbreak in decades remains a public health challenge, and biosecurity policy questions are on the rise. As the November elections approach, protecting Americans from infectious disease threats remains a public health priority. The Miller Center’s Health Care Policy Project is hosting this timely panel to examine which strategies are most likely to strengthen the CDC, what a reconstituted agency might look like, and how trust and confidence can be rebuilt.
