How to Be Book Club - "Conversation in the Mountains" by Paul Celan
About this Event
Existential crises are like a persistent rash. There's no cure, but if you're suffering from the Big Questions, maybe the How To Be Book Club can be a salve. Come hang out in Book Club Bar's back garden one Saturday each month, and join us in discussing works of philosophical fiction from across different eras and parts of the globe. We'll read the book beforehand (and do us a solid, if you can—get your book from our store), and then gather for casual conversation over drinks. No preparation needed; just bring your book and your curious mind!
This July, we're breaking form to read a book of essays, speeches, and letters by one of the greateast poets of the 20th century, Paul Celan. George Steiner wrote in The New Yorker that Celan’s prose was “transforming the landscape of poetic theory and of the philosophy of language.” We'll pair him, then, with Poetry, Language, Thought which collects Heidegger's writings on the role of art in society and culture, and language's capability to make meaning and represent truth. Perhaps returning to the most fundamental semantic building blocks can teach us how to go on writing?
This month's picks: by Paul Celan
& by Martin Heidegger
