James McKinley will trace the origins of American democracy to the Haudenosaunee, the powerful Native American nation whose Great Law of Peace served as the model for the framers of the US Constitution
The Great Law of Peace, adopted centuries before the arrival of Europeans in North America, influenced Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Adams and others. The Law centers around the concepts of peace, harmony and, most importantly, unity. It helped establish the ideas of co-equal branches of government, a bicameral legislature, and a system of checks and balances.
Speaker: James McKinley, historian, resides in Tredyffrin Township and has served on the Board of the Duportail House in Chesterbrook, PA, since 2016.
