How Experiences Becomes Biology: The epigenetic pathways linking early life

How do our earliest experiences shape who we become? This talk explores how early life experiences "get under the skin" by altering the epigenetic marks that regulate our genes, subsequently influencing how the brain develops and affecting health across the lifespan.Professor of Neuroscience, Richelle Mychasiuk will explain why DNA is not destiny,revealing how early life adversity can modify gene expression to increase both susceptibility to—and resiliency against—physical and mental health conditions later in life.

Your Speaker:

Professor Richelle Mychasiuk

Richelle Mychasiuk is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, within the School of Medical Sciences, at the Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney. With over 200 publications, Dr. Mychasiuk has a wealth of knowledge. She is particularly interested in understanding the effects that perinatal trauma and adverse childhood experiences have on adolescent neurodevelopment, with a specific focus on how these processes differ for males and females. She is also a co-founder of the GIN Discovery Program – an interdisciplinary research initiative centred on the Gut Immune-Brain axis, that brings together >180 scientists and clinicians that are committed to accelerating medical breakthroughs within this realm

What is the GIN Program?
The Gut, Immune and Neuro (GIN) Program is a collaborative network of researchers investigating how the gut, immune system, and brain work together to influence human health. Bringing together scientists from across Australia, the program explores everything from microbes and molecules to cognition and disease, helping translate complex discoveries into knowledge that benefits the wider community.
