“Jon Carroll is a one man band, a poet, a songwriter, a singer of every kind of song and above all, a musician’s musician…and I can also attest to his being a not-to-be-missed performer.”
~Mary Chapin Carpenter
About the New LP “Can't Afford Not To”:
"Carroll is a massive talent as a keyboard player and arranger with the awards to show for it, but now his guitar work is getting the must needed attention that he and it deserves. The vocal arrangements are smooth and airy, which makes the choruses stand out on all of the songs. Carroll’s powerhouse lead vocals storm through these songs, making each song a pleasure to listen to…" ~Andy Ziehli, Americana Gazette
…there are the groove songs, where what he’s singing is more important than how he’s singing it. …a hook fest, with bold vocal melodies…that make it impossible to sit still...the title track bobs along on a breezy reggae beat while Carroll sings about the karmic value of unlooked-for acts of kindness...so tuneful and sticky that you’re likely to find yourself singing the refrain while, say, you’re walking through the grocery store parking lot (true story). ~Eric Danton, #69
“[His album "Love Returns" is]…a vibrant reminder of what Carroll does best, whether it's conjuring vintage R&B/soul sounds, or composing evocative ballad(s) which manage to bring to mind both novelist Annie Proulx and John Prine, or coming up with a country ditty as innocently engaging as On the Front Porch.” The Washington Post
“…he headlines this session with talent and charm to spare.”
The Washington Post
“…the most reliable sideman in Washington, D.C., puts out another [album called 'Live Returns'] just mere months later.” NoDepression.com
