Horticulture Tours

Get an in-depth look at the design and horticulture of Allerton’s during Horticulture Tours on Sundays, April 19, May 31 and June 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. Meet at the .

Master Gardener and dedicated Allerton volunteer Ruth Mitchell will share ornamental planting information and interesting tidbits about Allerton’s 14 formal gardens, created by Robert Allerton between 1899 and 1946. Since the donation of the property to the University of Illinois in 1946, the gardens have been lovingly cared for by Park staff. Come see for yourself at this tour that will be both beautiful and informative.

About the instructor

Ruth Mitchell was bitten by the gardening bug at a young age, and has pursued it as a hobbyist ever since. After retiring from the U of I, she became a Master Gardener pursuing her interests in botany, horticulture, and garden design, as well as historical gardens in the U.S. and Europe. She has been delighted to participate in introducing visitors to the multifaceted gardens at Allerton Park.
