The Horniman Spring Fair is one of South London's most beloved annual events — a proper old-fashioned fete in the grounds of one of the city's most underrated cultural gems. Taking place on Saturday 11 April 2026 from 11am to 4pm at the Horniman Museum and Gardens (100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ), it's a joyful celebration of spring that works brilliantly for families, couples, and anyone who enjoys a day out with heart.

The Horniman Museum itself is a Mecca for the curious — home to a remarkable natural history collection, an aquarium, extensive ethnographic collections, and acres of terraced gardens with sweeping views across South London. On Spring Fair day, the gardens by the Bandstand become the centrepiece of the celebration, with a packed programme running from gates-open to close.

Expect live music, circus skills, craft workshops and stalls, face painting, children's rides, a bouncy castle, traditional fete games, bubble stations, food vendors, and the beloved Bee Buddy garden tours. The highlight for many is the Easter Bonnet Parade — children (and adults) can design and decorate their own bonnet in the craft corner before parading through the gardens. There's also an Animal Walk and seed-planting activities. The Butterfly House will be open at a discounted price of £2.50 per person (tickets on the day).

Tickets are priced at £6 for adults and £6 for children (advance purchase required — no tickets available on the door). Children under 2 enter free but still require a reserved ticket. This is an outdoor event that goes ahead rain or shine, with no refunds for bad weather.

Getting there: Forest Hill Overground station is 0.6km from the museum. Buses 176, 185, 197, P4, and 312 all stop nearby on London Road. Enter via the main entrance on London Road; the Horniman Drive entrance will not be open for this event.
