Tim Burton’s lavish, ink-black adaptation of Washington Irving casts Johnny Depp as a squeamish New York investigator dispatched upstate to solve a string of Headless Horseman killings in the village of Sleepy Hollow. Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, and a genuinely gnarly Christopher Lee round out the cast. Emmanuel Lubezki’s Oscar-nominated cinematography paints the Hudson Valley as a fever dream in blues and grays. We are contractually obligated to screen this film — often — and glad of it.
