History with Pizzazz” is the topic for the Belfast Historical Society meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday August 24, in the Abbott Room in the Belfast Free Library. Students from the Belfast Senior College course “History with Pizzazz” will share their research findings. One traces Belfast’s changing streetscape through Sanborn insurance maps. Another speaker focuses on the rise and fall of the city’s “broiler” boom. Three tell of ancestors in long-ago Maine – one relates the melancholy tale of a family torn apart by violence during the French and Indian War; one traces generations of forebearers who populate the pages of Williamson’s Belfast history; a third recounts stories drawn from diaries his great, great+ grandfather penned early in the Nineteenth Century. You’ll learn too of Louise Nevelson’s painful schooldays in Rockland and her soaring fame as one of the Twentieth Century’s most renowned sculptors.
Speakers include Deb Douthart, Barbara Ford-Latty, Rick Gatewood, Spencer Stephens, Hugh Townsend and Bill Whitman.
The Belfast Historical Society presents talks of local historical interest on the 4th Monday of the month from April through October. All presentations are at 7:00pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library and are open to the public. Seating is limited to 75. FMI visit BelfastMuseum.org or call 207 338-9229.
