In 1976, people across the United States came together in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Here in Marathon County, Wisconsin, the Bicentennial became a remarkable community event that included the usual parades and fireworks we often see at the 4th of July, but also novel and new programs from burying time capsules, ’76-themed theatrical productions, special foot races, and even a few beard contests. And looking back 50 years at the event as we are now, it is perhaps most remarkable to see an unprecedented amount of public interest in local history.
On Saturday, February 28th at 2:00pm for the first in our History Speaks lecture series for 2026. Historian Ben Clark will take a look back at the Bicentennial celebrations in Marathon County in this, our nation’s Semiquincentennial (250th).
