It will soon be time for our annual History Day and along with the University and Kirklees Technical College we are celebrating 200 years of technical education in Huddersfield. We have put together a bumper day including a wide variety of presentations (details below). 10 am – HLHS Chair – Welcome
10.15 am – Dave Smith (Heritage Quay) – ‘The Town that Taught Itself’ exhibition.
10.30 am - David Griffiths – A False Start? The short life of the 1825 Huddersfield & Scientific Mechanic Institute.
10.50 am – Alan Brooke: Huddersfield Hall of Science.
11.10 am - Questions
11.30 – 11.45 Break
11.45 am – Martyn Walker – Manchester’s loss, Huddersfield’s gain: The Huddersfield Mechanics Institution, Prince Albert and the Royal Society of Arts.
12.45 – Janette Martin - A brief introduction to the Mabel Tylecote Papers at the John Rylands Library and Ms Tylecote’s recently scanned book ‘The Mechanics’ Institutes of Lancashire and Yorkshire Before 1851’.
1pm – 2.15 pm Lunch (Soup, sandwiches and tray bakes available for purchase.
2.15 pm – Linda Shaw - The Women's Co-operative Guild: Education, Empowerment and Social Action.
2.35 pm – Dani Bool – Huddersfield and the Spirit of Co-operative Learning: Self-Help, Mutual Improvement, and the College Ideal.
2.55 pm – Questions
3.15 pm – Dave Russell – 'In an unpretentious way, the people of Huddersfield give probably more time to music than do those of any town of a similar size in England' (Musical Home Journal, 1908). Learning to sing and play in nineteenth-century Huddersfield and district.
