Join Columbia's Historic Preservation Commission for its fourth annual speaker series event
Local author and scholar David Sapp will present "History Is One Form of Preservation." Not everything can be preserved, but all our structures have a history. David will share the history of two historic structures that are no longer part of the architectural fabric of Columbia: the 200-year-old Bear Creek Christian Church and the 75-year-old Lustron House.
Genealogist Vikki Pauley will present "Barnett School and the Barnett Welfare Workers Club." Genealogical research can take many forms, and, in this presentation, Pauley will share the histories she has uncovered while researching the Barnett School and the Barnett Welfare Workers Club in northeastern Boone County. This club served as one of the precursors to today’s 4H Clubs, and Vikki will share how and where she performed the historical and genealogical research to learn more about this historic Boone County school, the club it housed and the club’s members.
Light refreshments provided.
Adults. Registration is encouraged but not mandatory. Seating is first-come, first-served.
About the presenters:
David Sapp is a retired chemical engineer and active historian, author and volunteer in Columbia. He is the past president of the Central Missouri Genealogical Society, the Missouri State Genealogical Society and the Columbia Cemetery Association, as well as the founder and former president of the Boone’s Lick Road Association and a lifetime member of the Boone County Historical Society. David has researched and written books and articles on numerous historic Boone County towns, churches, cemeteries and personalities.
Vikki Pauley began her journey as an amateur genealogist working to assist her sister-in-law in using Ancestry to create her own family tree. In the years since, Vikki has been a member of the Boone County and Central Missouri Genealogy Society (GSCM) and the Boone County Historical Society, as well as regional, state and national genealogy and related groups. She encourages all amateur researchers to utilize genealogy principles and practices to improve their own research and loves to share the excitement of putting pieces together to restore collective memories. For Vikki, curiosity drives the process and asking questions is an art form!
