About this Event

Celebrate the green heart of our city with an evening of storytelling and local history. Join us for the next installment of our Historically Local Speaker Series, featuring the incomparable Bob Blackburn.

The North Canadian River: The Lifeline of OKC Parks

The North Canadian River has always been more than just a waterway; it is the central artery that has pulsed through the development of Oklahoma City’s public spaces. From the initial land run of 1889 to the modern transformation of the MAPS projects, the river’s relationship with our parks has defined how we live, play, and connect.

In this session, Bob Blackburn will draw from his latest work, Parks of Oklahoma City: A History (co-authored with Brian Dougherty), to explore:

  • The Visionaries: How early city leaders utilized the river to shape Grand Boulevard and the city's "Emerald Necklace."
  • The Evolution: The journey from wild riverbanks to iconic destinations like Scissortail Park.
  • The Neighborhood Impact: A look at the quiet corners and public spaces that have fostered community connection for over 130 years.
