About the House (Built 1925):
Originally constructed by William and Mary Ann Hughes, the home reflects Panama City’s early growth and resilience. Mr. Hughes worked as a traveling salesman in the wholesale grocery business until the Great Depression forced the family to give up the house. In 1933, the Folkes family purchased it as a rental property. They later gifted the house to the First Methodist Church of Panama City in 1942, which continued to rent it until its sale in 1953. After changing hands for several decades, local artist Paulette Perlman—fondly known as “The Art Car Lady”—acquired the home in 2005 and reimagined it as the UnReal Artists Gallery, an eclectic space celebrating creativity and community. Art cars—customized vehicles transformed as personal artistic expressions—became a signature part of that spirit.
