Join us for our new Historical Book Club at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden!

We are thrilled to announce that we are launching a historical book club series at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden.

The first book will be MIRIAM COFFIN by Joseph Coleman Hart, founder and owner of the Mount Vernon Hotel, a day hotel from 1825-1833 located at what is now 421 East 61st Street.

MIRIAM COFFIN is an early and unique take on the U.S.'s robust whaling community and has been cited as an inspiration for Herman Melville’s MOBY DICK. MIRIAM COFFIN, named after the books anti-hero, focuses on the wife of a whaler and her conflict between morality and need for her family to succeed in a dying industry. Join us for a discussion in our historic tavern while also enjoying light refreshments (we will discuss the plot in detail so please come having read some or all of the book, or prepared for spoilers).

About the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden

In the 1820s and 1830s, men and women would travel from crowded downtown Manhattan up to "the country" of East 61st Street and the Mount Vernon Hotel to spend the day enjoying fresh air and leisure-time activities: socializing, listening to music, playing games, reading, dancing, taking carriage rides, and feasting on a hearty meal with the finest delicacies of the day. This 1799 carriage house, one of the oldest structures in Manhattan, was once one of approximately 50 day hotels operating in and around New York City, and is currently the only historical site to focus on these unique places.
