From protecting clothing, to carrying fresh vegetables from the garden, to drying tears, aprons have been a tool used by women throughout hundreds of years. Join presenters Janet Pyatt, The Backcountry Peddler, and Colleen L. Kaphengst Pappas, Herstory Handcrafts, to make your own 18th and/or 19th Century aprons and learn the differences in patterns, fabrics, and construction techniques. The schedule is designed to allow participants to take one workshop or both. There will be a $15 discount for those that sign up for both, for a total of $75 instead of $90. Workshop costs include instructions and kits with pre-cut fabric pieces, cotton tape, thread, needles, and written instructions for sewing the aprons. Sewing machines will be available or participants may bring their own. Lunch will be on your own with downtown Salisbury restaurants a short walk away.The schedule:
18th Century apron workshop: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Break for lunch: 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
19th Century apron workshop: 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
18th Century apron workshop: Taught by Janet Pyatt, the Colonial apron will be made of white linen with linen thread and cotton tape ties. Sewing techniques will include stroke-gathering and whip-stitching. Cost: $40
19th Century apron workshop: Taught by Colleen L. Kaphengst Pappas, the mid-1860’s apron will be a pinner apron (apron with an attached bib that is pinned in place on the bodice). It will be constructed of period-appropriate cotton fabric in a variety of prints and plaids with cotton thread. Techniques will include machine stitching, whip-stitching, and pleating. Cost: $50.00
