Twirling little strips of paper to make pictures and designs is not something that just appeared out of nowhere in the 1970s and 1980s when it was very popular here in the United States. Paper quilling was used in the 15th and 16th century by French and Italian nuns and monks to decorate religious items. Often the paper was given a thin edge of gold to mimic the more expensive gold wire filigree. Paper quilling (also known as paper filigree) was a common craft among upper class women in the late 18th and early 19th century. It's even mentioned in Jane Austen. In "Sense and Sensibility" Lucy Steele is making a basket with quilling for one of the Middleton children. The project is ambitious and offers Lucy and Elinor an opportunity to talk while Elinor helps cut strips of paper for Lucy. You can also spot quilling in the 1995 BBC production of "Pride and Prejudice," when the Bennet ladies have several rolled strips of paper strewn about.Join us on May 2 for a quick introduction to this historic craft. Will learn some basic techniques making flowers and use them to create a lovely Mother's Day Card. All materials and tools will be provided. Just bring your $5 and come make art with us.
