Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) is hosting the first of four Historic Springfield TreeWalks. This engaging community walking tour focuses on Urban Forestry & Tree Health, offering a guided exploration of Springfield’s remarkable historic tree canopy and the vital role urban trees play in shaping healthier, more livable neighborhoods.
During this outdoor program, participants will walk through one of Jacksonville’s oldest neighborhoods while learning how trees contribute to shade, cooling, stormwater management, wildlife habitat, and overall urban environmental health. Led by International Society of Arboriculture Board Certified Master Arborist and City of Jacksonville Urban Forestry Manager Jonathan Colburn, the tour introduces the science behind tree health, species diversity, and how arborists evaluate and care for trees in an urban environment.
Along the route, attendees will encounter notable tree specimens and discover how historic planting decisions helped shape Springfield’s character and walkable streets. Participants will also learn how communities and cities work together to maintain healthy urban forests and why protecting mature tree canopy is increasingly important as Florida faces rising temperatures and changing climate conditions.
Whether you are a nature enthusiast, history lover, homeowner, or simply curious about the trees around you, this walking tour offers a unique opportunity to see Springfield through a new lens.
Each of these 4 tours will feature ASL interpretation.
