Historic Eastside: Ortega Park • Calle Milpas • Tortillas
About this Event
Join Chicano Culture SB and Santa Barbara historian Michael Montenegro for an in-depth community gathering exploring the roots, resilience, and living heritage of the Historic Eastside.
This lecture traces how the Eastside took shape as Barrio Nuevo—emerging out of the shift from Barrio Viejo—to form its own thriving ecosystem of family life, cultural preservation, and movement.
The presentation will focus on three central touchstones of Eastside history:
1. Ortega Park: The beating heart of community sports, gatherings, and grassroots Chicano murals.
2. Calle Milpas: The essential cultural and commercial thoroughfare connecting generations through business, cruising, and everyday community life.
3. The Tradition of the Tortilla: Celebrating the cultural symbol of sustenance and honoring historic institutions like La Tolteca and Rose Cafethat anchored the neighborhood.
