The lower back and hip are the meeting place of the upper and lower body; the torso and the legs. They are impacted by many factors. Anatomically they share many groups of muscles. When a specific muscle is affected, it may lead to compensatory movements, fatigue, and pain in the other surrounding muscles. Lower back pain may manifest due to injury, poor posture, when overwhelm and a sense of overload predominates, when there is dysfunction in the viscera.
What we will do :
- mobilise and strengthen the lower back and hips in our own bodies.
- check in : where are you at with bodywork for hips and lower back? what hip and'or lower back issues are people presenting with? what are you experiencing with clients?
- get clear with hip and lower back anatomy, and where the meridians and fascial lines run.
- discussion : what are some common dysfunctions/imbalances that we can support?
- explore which gestures we use indirectly (distally and globally), along with directly, that can relate to a session addressing hip and/or lower back imbalances and/or dysfunctions
- explore more subtle 'non-doing' practices
- demos of techniques/gestures
- review gestures already learnt and explore new ones, flows, getting clear
- play lab : time for exploration and practise without overdoing.
- sharing circle : discoveries and feedback
You will receive:
- a handout of gestures covered
- greater understanding around the why, when and how to approach the hips and lower back; what and where else do we need to explore
- clarity around the gestures
- an opportunity to both give and receive bodywork
- a supportive space to (re)connect with other committed bodyworkers
- morning tea
Please bring balm, a small cushion, cloths, a notebook and pen, lunch
Workshops such as this offer an opportunity for practising therapists to both receive from and give to other therapists. In this way we are reminded of the value of our work.
Practise, discussion and honest feedback allows us to assess and reassess the effectiveness of what we are doing. This supports the refining of our practise.
And so we grow.
Our practise deepens and we come together in support.
This is training to finesse bodywork for the lower back and hips.
Motivation for my work comes from my deepening understanding that freedom of movement and strength in our body profoundly impacts us on all levels - physically mentally/emotionally and spiritually. Blood and qi moves freely, our posture is more aligned, our organs can function more optimally, we feel more grounded and we interact more gracefully with the ebbs and flows of life.
We live in a body that is designed to move. Our bodies (and our minds) thrive when we move and extend and reach and pull and push and twist and turn, when we exert, and when we rest and feel and listen. When we do this with our bodies, our minds also become freer; expansive and exploratory.
"I am a multidisciplinary bodyworker and senior Zenthai therapist and experienced workshop facilitator, and movement advocate. I have been practising hands-on bodywork since 2002 and Zenthai since late 2008. I am motivated by a wish for all people to be comfortable in their own skin; body, mind and spirit.
I am passionate about the potency of this therapeutic bodywork and am always excited to share my understandings of it.”
Monique specialises in Zenthai Shiatsu, Pregnancy Zenthai, Internal Organ Bodywork, Craniosacral therapy and Lomi Lomi, and offers lifestyle and self care guidance. She has a particular interest in the feet, joint mobility, easful breathing and nervous system reset.

Though we understand that by allowing the nervous system to quieten healing is possible, how do we, as bodyworkers, enable that to occur? We know that the body has an innate intelligence. How can we support it? When there is dysfunction or imbalance in one, or perhaps, more, area(s), is our focus on that dysfunction or imbalance, or do look for the underlying cause?
Can we align with what is going well, with health?
When we offer bodywork that is invitational to/with this unique organism that is our client; when we remain curious, and when we unite in our common experience of being human, perhaps then we can be helpful.
Many people demonstrate poor range of movement and strength in the lower back and hip area. Compound this with a predominantly sedentary lifestyle and dysfunction resulting in pain in these areas, becomes the norm. Soft tissues become short, tight and weak and the joints of the bony tissues become stiff. Excess weight creating lordosis, may give the task of keeping the body upright to compensatory muscles such as the hamstrings.
You are invited to share in this day exploring the hips and lower back.
This workshop is open to graduated Zenthai therapists..
