Do you dream of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail or another long trail? Whether you're preparing for a thru-hike, a section hike, or simply want to explore the idea, this six-week course will give you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to make your adventure a reality. At Lost Peacock Creamery, surrounded by the freedom of peafowl and the grace of our dairy goats, we will dive deep into the world of long trails and discover that no matter your age, size, or experience, YOU CAN DO IT!Course Details:
Instructor: Beverly King, a Pacific Crest Trail adventurer who began her hiking journey at age 62 in 2023.
Dates: Saturdays, December 28, 2024, to February 1, 2025
Time: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Location: Lost Peacock Creamery, Olympia, Washington
Class Size: Limited to 15 participants (special consideration for those under 18 with an adult)
Weekly Overview:
Week 1 – December 28: Introduction
Understand the realities and expectations of hiking a long trail, with emphasis on the Pacific Crest Trail.
Learn about permits, costs, and resources for planning your hike.
Discuss the similarities and differences between thru-hikes and section hikes.
Share stories, ask questions, and review available books for research.
Week 2 – January 4: Gear, Gear, and More Gear
Dive into essential gear categories: clothing, packs, shoes, sleep systems, navigation tools, electronics, and first aid.
Try out gear provided on-site and explore what works best for you.
Week 3 – January 11: Trail Nutrition
Discover strategies for fueling your journey, including prepped boxes, convenience store stops, hiker boxes, and prepping your own meals.
Learn what kinds of food work best for trail life.
Week 4 – January 18: Life on the Trail
Get practical tips for handling sore feet, weather changes, bathroom breaks, cleanliness, hitchhiking, trail magic, and Trail Angels.
Learn how to stay comfortable and safe on the trail.
Week 5 – January 25: Wildlife and Trail Hazards
Prepare for encounters with wildlife like bears, snakes, cougars, and mosquitoes.
Learn about trail-specific hazards, such as snow, river crossings, and blowdowns.
Discuss how to avoid or handle challenges like poodle dog bush and salty deer visits.
Week 6 – February 1: What About You?
Participate in a pack shakedown to evaluate your gear.
Develop strategies for preparing your body and mind for all stages of the hike.
Review your personal plans and apply practical safety tips.
