HIKE THREE (WAITĀKERE RANGES - SATURDAY 19TH DECEMBER) - The Trial of Te Toa

The Trial of Te Toa (Conquering the severe valley-to-ridge vertical climb at Kuataika Trig): Walk Into the Crucible. Set in the isolated wild of Anawhata—a coastline historically defined by uncompromised boundaries. The summit of Kuataika was the ancestral ground where tribal elders gathered to vet a young man's maturity and character before he could be called Te Toa (the warrior). We hit this steep vertical grunt to forge the Ironman within—auditing our spirit under intense pressure and outworking our excuses to earn the clear foresight and authority needed to lead our families from the absolute front.
This Hike completes the 3 hikes about what it takes to have a warrior heart.
Doing this as a pure return walk from North Piha to the Trig is a massive 16–18 km journey with significant cumulative elevation gain (climbing out of Piha, dropping into the Anawhata valleys, and climbing the trig). Expect it to take 6 to 8 hours of solid hiking.
What You Will See
Nikau Groves & Ancient Canopy: The climb up Whites Track takes you through a dense, lush coastal forest dominated by massive tree ferns (whekī), towering nikau palms, and regenerating kauri trees.
The Unsealed High-Country Road: Walking along Anawhata Road offers a dramatic change of scenery. It feels isolated and high up, giving you glimpses of the deep, green Waitākere valleys falling away on either side.
Rolling Coastal Pasture: Entering Anawhata Farm feels like stepping into a postcard. You'll walk right through open, bright green paddocks with grazing livestock, framed by a backdrop of dense native forest and the distant blue ocean.
The Suspension Bridge: The deep descent into the valley rewards you with a crossing over a large, scenic suspension bridge spanning the rushing Anawhata Stream. It is a perfect spot to pause and look down into the clear pool below.
Panoramas from the Summit (265m): At the Kuataika Trig, the bush suddenly clears onto a jagged rocky outcrop. You will get a breathtaking, unobstructed 360-degree view. To the north, you can see the massive sand dunes and headlands of Te Henga (Bethells Beach), and to the west, the endless, wild horizon of the Tasman Sea.
The total distance there and back is approximately 18.5 kilometres return.
