HIKE ONE (WAITĀKERE RANGES - SATURDAY 21ST NOVEMBER) - The Watchman Sentinel

This is part of a 3 event hiking experience about resilience and accountability to help men obtain a warrior heart ready for 2027.
Establish Absolute Grounding. Named after the massive rock headland at Karekare that held the ancient fortress Te Kaka Whakaara ("The Kākā Parrot Standing Watch"). A sentinel takes total accountability for his watch. The steep clay and energy-sapping sand strip away excuses and force us to find our internal anchor. It is our reminder to drop the ego, tune out the world, and build the unshakeable, protective vigilance required to stand watch over our own households.
The Zion Hill Track Loop is widely regarded as one of the most dramatic and diverse half-day tramps in West Auckland.
Starting at the Karekare car park, you pass the initial biosecurity cleaning station and head into Pōhutukawa Glade. From there, the trail immediately shifts into a steady, relentless climb through regenerating coastal forest toward the summit of Mount Zion (263m). At the high points, you are rewarded with wide, sweeping panoramic views looking directly out over Karekare Beach, the crashing Tasman Sea, and the coastal headlands.
From the high ridges, the track winds downward through lush, sheltered gullies thick with nīkau palms, punga ferns, taraire, and ancient pūriri trees. You will cross a few small forest streams and navigate a steep, step-heavy boardwalk descent that features an impressive viewing platform shaped like the prow of a Māori waka (canoe) pointing out to sea.
Distance: 8.5 km to 10 km loop
Time: Allow 4 to 4.5 hours to complete the entire loop at a steady pace
Difficulty: Intermediate
