The Little Applegate watershed is a tributary of the Applegate River, which enters the Rogue River near Grants Pass. Come explore the grassy ridges, oak woodlands, and conifer draws of this part of the Rogue basin which is a joy to hike in the spring. This hike will start and end at different trailheads and we will shuttle vehicles before we start hiking. We will start at the farther upstream Tunnel Ridge trailhead, climb steeply up Tunnel Ridge for almost a mile to the main Sterling Mine Ditch trail, then hike the trail for over 2 miles, mostly contouring downstream and intersect with a descending trail and hike one mile to the Bear Gulch trailhead. This hike will be on trail with some steep climbs and descents, some up and down on sometimes slippery sloping trail. Trekking poles advised.
On this trail, you will get excellent views of the Siskiyou Mountains, spring bird spotting, and some wildflowers will be present this time of year. If weather is an issue on this date, our rescheduled date will be April 4. For more info: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/documents/files/med-sterlingmine-brochure.pdf
Note: Ticks and poison oak are both present on this trail.
