[Opis w języku polskim znajduje się poniżej]
In 1961, in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, a group of recent migrants set out to do something audacious: make their own feature-length sound and color film. Highlanders Wedding is the result of this determination and constitutes the earliest known moving-image documentation of performative practices within the Polish Highlanders community in the United States.
Conceived as a carefully staged reenactment of a traditional Highlander wedding, the film draws on embodied memory. What we encounter are not amateur actors merely performing assigned roles, but accomplished folk singers, musicians, and dancers, performing from experience rather than rehearsal. They draw on wedding rituals they had themselves lived through only a few years earlier in villages that were far away geographically but still close in memory. It is a rare ethnographic document and a striking example of how filmmaking becomes part of migrant community life.
Highlanders Wedding was screened only a handful of times in Chicago in the 1960s, exclusively within the Highlander community. Recently, the original reels were discovered in a private collection. In 2025, with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation, the film was digitized in 4K and a new 16mm print was struck. The May 15 screening will mark the premiere of the new 16mm print, presented with live English subtitles – the first, and possibly only, opportunity to see this film in English!
Highlanders Wedding, a movie by Ludwina Ról-Łuszczkowa, Antonina Błazończyk & George DeBelina (USA, 1961, 88 minutes, 16mm) is presented in partnership with Chicago Film Archives, the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America, and Agata Zborowska’s Not-So-Ordinary project, with support from the Department of Slavic Languages & Literature and the Department of History.
The screening of Highlanders Wedding will be followed by a reception. This event is free and open to the public. Doors will open thirty minutes prior to showtime.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
W 1961 roku w chicagowskiej dzielnicy Pilsen grupa imigrantów postanowiła podjąć się śmiałego przedsięwzięcia: nakręcić własny pełnometrażowy kolorowy film z dźwiękiem. „Góralskie wesele” jest owocem tej determinacji i stanowi najwcześniejszy znany zapis filmowy przedstawienia tradycyjnego góralskiego wesela w Chicago.
Film „Góralskie wesele” był wyświetlany w Chicago w latach 60. zaledwie kilka razy, wyłącznie w kręgach społeczności podhalańskiej. Oryginalne taśmy 16mm odkryto ostatnio w prywatnej kolekcji. W 2025 roku, przy wsparciu National Film Preservation Foundation, film został zdigitalizowany w rozdzielczości 4K i przygotowano nową kopię na taśmie 16mm.
Pokaz 15 maja będzie premierą nowej kopii 16mm, wyświetlanej z angielskimi napisami na żywo – to pierwsza i prawdopodobnie jedyna okazja, by obejrzeć ten film w języku angielskim!
Na tę specjalną okazję wraz ze społecznością podhalańską (i nie tylko!) przygotowaliśmy angielskie napisy do filmu, by dotarł on do jak najszerszej publiczności. Nie byłoby to możliwe bez wielomiesięcznej (i wolontaryjnej!) pracy i zaangażowania wielu osób, którym chcielibyśmy podziękować.
Pani Maria Krzeptowska, Agnieszka Bobak, Marek Bukowski, dr Marek Liszka przygotowali transkrypcję dialogów i pieśni z filmu*
Dr Marek Liszka (Kierownik Góral Studies Center - Centrum Badań Góralskich UIK) i Paulina Podobińska (Uniwersytet Ignatianum w Krakowie) stworzyli angielski przekład.
Dr Magda Studnicka (Uniwersytet Ignatianum w Krakowie) i Paulina Podobińska (Uniwersytet Ignatianum w Krakowie) przygotowały napisy do filmu.
Becca Hall (Chicago Film Society/Chicago Film Archives) była odpowiedzialna za redakcję i korektę napisów.
Koordynacja: Adam Ploszaj i Agata Zborowska.
Projekcja "Góralskiego wesela" (Ludwina Ról-Łuszczkowa, Antonina Błazończyk i George DeBelina, USA, 1961, 88 minut, 16mm) organizowana jest we współpracy ze Związek Podhalan w Ameryce Północnej, Film Studies Center, Chicago Film Archives, w ramach projektu Not-So-Ordinary i przy wsparciu UChicago Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures i UChicago History.
Wydarzenie jest bezpłatne i otwarte dla wszystkich zainteresowanych. Sala kinowa będzie otwarta trzydzieści minut przed rozpoczęciem seansu.
