This class is Ages 14 +
Taught by Jonathan Mackenzie Gordon
Much like stage combat, 18th Century Highland Broadsword Fencing relies on learning specific actions in a cooperative partner dynamic. This class will focus on using partner plays from multiple Broadsword treaties to give students a solid understanding of dynamic actions that can be used in staging realistic and entertaining stage fights.
Class Level: Open
Sunday, Dec 6, 2026 @ 10am to 12pm EST
at the Reston Players’ Lindsay C. Petersen Rehearsal Hall
264 Sunset Park Drive, Herndon, Va 20170
Jonathan MacKenzie Gordon has been a student of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2008. In 2012 he created the Virginia Academy of Fencing’s Highland Broadsword Program and was the senior instructor for the program until 2021. In 2021 he founded MacKenzie Broadsword to continue teaching Scottish Martial Arts virtually and in person and has partnered with the renowned Maryland Kunst des Fechtens in Columbia, MD for conducting in person group classes.
Jonathan started his journey in historical fencing with German Longsword and Italian Rapier but was always fascinated by the weapons used by the Scottish Highlanders. He began studying the Cateran Society curriculum, which opened the doorways to the fencing systems used by his ancestors. He is a Level III Certified Instructor in the Cateran Society, currently pursuing his Level IV certification, and is currently serving as the Cateran Society Vice-President.
He actively researches and recreates Scottish historical swordsmanship based on period fencing treatises, and has traveled internationally to train with experts in the field. Jonathan is currently studying several Scottish broadsword and smallsword fencing systems, including Angelo, Page, Sinclair, Ferdinand, Mathewson, among others. He has taught classes and workshops at several events including DC HEMA, Maryland KDF’s Autumnfecht, Brass Frog, the Western Martial Arts Workshop and An Cruinneachadh in Ontario, Canada and was the primary instructor for the recent 2025 American Smallsword Symposium.
As an active competitor he has participated and medaled in numerous events including Longpoint, Longpoint South, Oktoberfecht, Clash of Claymores and Brass Frog (Gold Medal in Military / Dueling Saber in 2014 and 2024).
