Nina Brown, supported by fellow Old Low Light volunteers, will describe the role of women over 800 years since the founding of North Shields in or around 1225, how this has changed over time and the challenges they faced.

A founding trustee of the heritage centre, over the years Nina has done much research into the part played by women in the life of the town, particularly when North Shields was a booming fishing port. During the 800thanniversary year, she decided to delve further back into the earlier centuries.

She will share some of the difficulties encountered, including how in the earlier centuries, women were often identified only as the ‘wife of’, the ‘mother of’, or ‘widow of’.

The talk will extend from 13th century women – one who is registered as paying taxes on goods and property and lay sisters at the St Leonard’s Leper Hospital – to other women, who in different ways have made significant contributions during the highs and lows of North Shields’ history, right up to the present day.
