The Dr. James Franklin Historic House & Gallery, in partnership with the Mobile Medical Museum, proudly presents the “Healing the Community: Mobile’s Black Medical History Tour”—a powerful and immersive experience that brings to life the untold stories of African American medical professionals who served with resilience and excellence during one of the most challenging periods in our nation’s history. This unique tour traces the footsteps of pioneering Black physicians, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and healthcare advocates who provided critical care in segregated Mobile, often under-resourced yet unwavering in their commitment to their communities.
Participants will journey through historic neighborhoods and sites that once housed Black-owned pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics—spaces that were not only centers of healing, but also pillars of dignity, self-determination, and community strength. Along the route, riders will learn about the lives and legacies of influential figures whose work helped lay the foundation for greater equity in healthcare.
The tour will begin at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center, where attendees can view historic photographs, medical devices, and interpretive text panels. After viewing, attendees will board Trail vehicle(s) to begin the tour. The tour will end back at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center.
