Havoc Hendricks + Samantha daSilva: Exhibition

In this joint exhibition, artists Havoc Hendricks and Samantha daSilva explore how landscapes—both physical and emotional—shape our identities, our movements, and the marks we leave behind.

Hendricks creates work that does not demand attention, but invites it. Raised in rural Idaho, he spent his early years closely observing the details of quiet environments: the shifting lines of creek water, the patterns of wood grain, the stratified stories inside geodes. Later as a mountaineer, his view expanded to remote terrains and the earth’s intricate layers—observations that evolved into his signature approach. Through what he calls “detailed minimalism,” Hendricks employs unconventional tools and inventive techniques to translate nature’s subtle rhythms into refined, contemplative compositions.

DaSilva, a Brazilian-born artist living in Salt Lake City, approaches place from a journeyed perspective. Having moved over forty times due to natural disasters and life circumstances, her work becomes a map of memory, belonging, and adaptability. Using found materials such as dirt and sawdust, her large-scale relief sculptures evoke topographic maps and cracked earth—geographies that hold stories of migration, loss, and renewal. For daSilva, art is a navigational tool: a way to root herself in constant motion and connect to new surroundings.

Together, Hendricks and daSilva offer a meditation on the environments that form us—those we study up close, those we carry with us, and those we build anew. Their work encourages us to consider the subtle traces of where we come from, and the pathways we forge as we move through an ever-shifting world.
