Harriet Tubman "Stitching Stories of Freedom" Quilt Class
About this Event
The Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore will be featuring a multi-month Harriet Tubman quilt class designed around applique/piecing techniques and commemorative historical themes.
Class Details and Description
- Level: Beginner to intermediate.
- Project Scope: Completing 6 blocks to create a quilt tied to the themes of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
- Context: The classes align with local public art projects like "Stitching the Stories of Freedom: A Byway Quilt Trail Honoring the Underground Railroad," which features historic block designs and center medallions.
Fabric Requirements:
Background fabric-3 yards
Dark fabric- 2 yards
Medium fabric- 2 yards
Light fabric- 2 yards
In the past when students have made this quilt, some have used batiks, others have used typical Civil War prints and some have used bright prints. It will be your quilt so you decide what fabrics make you happy! Some have used a mixture of darks, medium prints and lights which is what I would recommend. Using lots of various prints will lend great interest to the quilt so perhaps you will want to purchase a variety of fat quarters which will go well together. Whatever fabrics you choose to use, I would strongly recommend that you prewash your fabric so that fabrics won't "bleed" when the quilt is washed in the future.

Working sewing machine
Thread to match the color of your fabrics (I use cream or gray thread which will work for many fabrics.)
