Handler discrimination or HD is a unique element in the AKC Scent Work program. Unlike the Odor Elements, which use specifically calibrated amounts of essential oils, HD uses an article (Cotton sock, glove, or cotton ball/cardboard swab) scented with their handler’s personal odor.Start the process of teaching our dogs how to “Discriminate” between our odor imprinted article (high value) and another individual’s odor (low value).
Discuss the Engagement tools of Play, Reward Sequences, Clarity of Objectives.
We will cover both the technique to use to effectively imprint your scent on the article, how the preparation and implementation differs between HD training and training for essential oils, and work with each K9 team through the process of building high value on their handlers discrete odor and the compulsion to search for, locate and inform.
As there is considerable cross-over in the imprinting and search techniques in HD and Tracking, Article/Evidence Search and Utility, trainers in other disciplines will also find the session informative.
The clinic is open to all levels from just beginning to fine tuning your skills at the Master level.
Working slots will practice specific aspects of imprinting and assessing and building hunt drive for the Handler’s own odor and discriminating between two or more individuals’ odors.
Audit spots will be assigned two or more working teams to watch and use provided Observational worksheets to create a short debrief assessment for their assigned monitored teams.
