Handheld Meditation Labyrinths with Maia Scott

Workshop Description

Walking a labyrinth invites you to center yourself, find peace of mind and open to new possibilities. Dating back to 2000 BCE, these winding patterns cross time and cultures representing one's journey with all its twists and turns. In this workshop, you will learn a series of seed patterns that will enable you to create various types of labyrinths out of almost anything anywhere, from tracing in the sand on the beach to piecing together repurposed materials. After learning to draw different labyrinths and enjoying a short meditative walk on a labyrinth you created we will discuss the benefits of different materials for creating various designs.

Once you find a labyrinth that feels good to you, let's explore SCRAP's repurposed offerings and assemble materials to create a tactile hand-held labyrinth that celebrates who you are, honors an intention or embraces the joy of creative process.

You will leave with:

• At least three seed patterns to start you off creating labyrinths.
• Personal notes and process images to help you replicate your success.
• Basic ideas for setting intentions for both making and walking labyrinths.
• A hand-held labyrinth to take home.
• And ideas for creating labyrinths both large and small to hold space for anything from finding inner peace to generating social justice allyship.

About Maia Scott

Maia Scott is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator who teaches accessible theater, movement and arts classes at City College of San Francisco and Lighthouse for the Blind & Visually Impaired. She is also a certified labyrinth facilitator offering meditative arts practice labyrinth workshops. Maia's labyrinth artwork has appeared at the Palo Alto Art Center, Root Division, and at national and local conferences. Currently, a couple of Maia's tactile creations travel between San Francisco Library branches as part of Museum of Craft & Design's Mobile Make Art program. A passion for access and inclusion sends Maia in yet other directions such as working as an audio description consultant with Gravity Acces Services, serving as Vice Chair on Guide Dogs for the Blind's Alumni Board, serving on the Fine Arts Museums' Access Committee and consulting with the CA Academy of Science on co-designing a new accessible hands-on space.
