“Hamnet” — Cabin Fever Film Series 2026

Fenimore Art Museum is thrilled to present the second film of our 2026 Cabin Fever Film Series, a ravishingly beautiful and heartbreakingly profound exploration of love, grief, and memory depicting the family life of William Shakespeare. Directed by Chloé Zhao, only the second woman to win the Oscar for Best Director (Nomadland), the film is adapted by the acclaimed novel by Maggie O’Farrell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Zhao.

The film is presented free of charge with suggested cash donation at door. Reserving seats in advance is not required but highly encouraged. If you do reserve your seat in advance, please arrive by 7PM or else your seat will be given to someone waiting at the door.

Summary:

In Stratford Upon Avon in the late 16th century, an eccentric girl named Agnes has an encounter with a latin tutor named Will, eldest son of the well known Shakespeare family. They quickly fall in love, and after a turbulent and contentious romance, begin to start a family. But Agnes becomes haunted by visions of an all consuming darkness lying somewhere in her future, just as Will begins to yearn for life beyond Stratford. A poetic and deeply emotional drama from Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Hamnet explores the depth of grief, the healing power of love, and how those powerful forces intertwined to inspire Shakespeare’s greatest tragic masterpiece.
