This exciting event takes place at the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage, located in the historic former Twelfth Street YMCA—the first YMCA for African Americans during segregation. This remarkable landmark has welcomed legendary figures like Langston Hughes and Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to serve on the United States Supreme Court.
Join Dr. Hamilton for an evening filled with entertainment, fellowship, community awards, and inspiration, as she welcomes an exciting line-up of VIP guest speakers and presents the Newsome Awards, led by Dr. Frederick Ware Newsome.
The Newsome Awards has been a national platform for years, helping to advance and support both up-and-coming and established artists in the music industry, while also recognizing the achievements of deserving community leaders like Dr. Hamilton. Over the years, it has welcomed celebrity guests such as Dr. Bobby Jones, Paul Beasley, the Gospel Keynotes, and James Hall’s Worship and Praise. Dr. Newsome, a former Advisory Board member for the world-renowned Stellar Awards, has twice served on the Board of Governors for the Grammy Awards. In 2020, he ran in the Democratic primary for Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland.. Frederick Ware Newsome is an American icon who brings great prestige and honor to this “history in the making” event.
Joining tonight’s “All-Star” lineup of guest speakers is James “Jimmy” Garvin, an African American Golf Hall of Famer and community leader who has devoted his career to expanding the sport’s reach among minority youth through the Jimmy Garvin Legacy Foundation. Growing up in poverty, Garvin has used golf to teach young people values like integrity and scholarship. Born to migrant farm workers in Florida, he rose above humble beginnings to graduate from Howard University. His inspiring journey has been featured on the Golf Channel’s *Golf in America: The Jimmy Garvin Story*, and he is the author of the autobiography, *Legacy of a Common Man*. The 2026 Rhonda Hamilton 4 DC Mayor Campaign is honored to have Mr. Garvin join the campaign as the Senior Advisor for Youth Affairs. Dr. Hamilton is set to unveil her 2027 Youth Advancement Agenda, which is just one of many highlights of the evening. Dr. Hamilton is a leader of and for the people. Backed by the strong support of deeply rooted community organizations to include National Life Group, The Black Panther Movement, The Black Business Owner's Network, the Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD), and the Military Children's Six Foundation, Dr. Hamilton’s leadership is what DC needs.
