Paul's Bio:
Paul Lichty has become one of Des Moines’ most prolific freelance musicians and composers since moving there in 2020. Now the bandleader of the Paul Lichty Jazz Orchestra (PLJO), trombonist/music director for BYOBrass and "The Domita Show" and jazz chair of the Iowa Pride Ensembles, Paul balances these duties while also working as a band director at Winterset Junior High School. Paul has developed a unique and personal approach at composing and arranging for ensembles of all sizes and skill levels. PLJO’s first album, “Dark Soul”, was released in 2021 and can be found on all steaming platforms, BandCamp, as well as Paul’s website. BYOBrass' second album, "Breathe", was released in 2025 and features several of his newest arrangements and compositions. In 2024, Paul was recipient of the CJC Des Moines Hall of Fame "Next Generation" award which recognizes an up-and-coming musician who has made an impact on the music scene in Des Moines.
In addition to hearing his music performed by PLJO and BYOBrass, almost every ensemble that Paul performs with regularly performs his compositions or arrangements. He has arranged music for contemporary jazz giants Kurt Rosenwinkel and Ben Wendel for their respective residencies at UNI as SDIJ guest artists, charts that both guest artists have continued to use for other residencies. Additionally, Paul has contributed music for Michael Conrad’s new project, the Iowa Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, an elite ensemble that performs works by Iowa composers. Paul's recent projects include serving as music director and arranger for "The Domita Show", a new cabaret at Noce featuring Domita Sanchez, arranging music for the newly formed Iowa Pride Ensembles, and PLJO collaboration shows with Wave Cage and Annie Kemble.
Other recent commissions and collaborations include works for Heath Alan, Jeff Kane (NOLA Jazz Band), Napoleon Douglas, Max Wellman, Dr. Robert Washut (UNI Jazz Panthers), Lucas Petersen (Purdue University pep bands and Winterset HS Jazz Band), Logan Vanderwiel (Marion HS Jazz Band), Ellie Hensen (Roosevelt HS pep band), Jonathan Green (West Delaware HS concert band), Doug Gibson (Des Moines Christian Middle School) and Brad Jensen (Hudson HS Jazz Band). Paul has enjoyed arranging music for his own student ensembles at Winterset and Carlisle and loves being asked to arrange music for other educational ensembles - his arrangements have been performed regularly by concert, marching/pep, and jazz bands throughout the Midwest. Equally adept at music formatting and preparation, Paul has also worked as a copyist for New York City composer/arranger, David Berger. Paul cites Bob Brookmeyer, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Douglas, Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, and Darcy James Argue as his greatest compositional influences.
Paul also maintains an active performance schedule as a tenor and bass trombonist. Currently a trombonist for BYOBrass, Paul has also performed with the NOLA Jazz Band, BONORAMA, the Max Wellman Big Band, the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, and the Des Moines Big Band, among others. Prior to moving to Des Moines, Paul worked as a cruise ship musician and arranger onboard the Crystal Symphony.
