About this Event
Join us as we explore the history, cultural significance, and social dimensions of Black hair through painting. This workshop combines creative practice with reflection on identity, self-expression, and the ways hair intersects with societal expectations.
We will consider questions such as:
• What makes hair “beautiful,” and whose standards define it?
• How do norms of professionalism and beauty shape perceptions of Black bodies?
• Can choices about hair be understood as acts of social or political resistance?
This workshop offers a safe and inspiring space for participants to connect with their creativity while examining the ways Black hair is intertwined with culture, identity, and politics.
No prior painting experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity and creativity.
This event will be hosted by Kambua, founder of Unruly Beauty, a digital platform and workshop series that examines beauty and body politics as deeply embedded systems of power. Kambua encourages audiences to reimagine how bodies are seen and valued - moving beyond restrictive, exclusionary norms to recognise the inherent dignity, complexity, and worth of all people.
