Gŵyl Tyisha Festival is a bold new community project led by artist Huw Alden Davies, Aled Thomas (Beast Promotions) and Sian James, in collaboration with Llannon Community Council - bringing our shared history to life like never before.
Building on the success of The Great Mountain Portrait (2023) - an ambitious project that created the largest community portrait in the Gwendraeth Valley - this next chapter turns its focus to a powerful local story.
We are honouring John Hughes, known locally as Jack Tyisha, a central figure in the Rebecca Riots whose bravery helped shape Welsh history. His story has lived quietly in our valley for generations. Now, together, we will make it seen, heard, and felt.
Hundreds will march through the village as Merched Becca, retracing the footsteps of those who stood against injustice. From Upper Tumble to Parc y Mynydd Mawr, we won’t just walk through history; we’ll become part of it.
This is more than a parade - it’s a living portrait of our community. A powerful expression of who we are, shaped by identity, resilience, and shared pride.
Families, schools, clubs, neighbours - everyone is invited. Create your costume, step forward, and bring your voice and presence.

And the celebration doesn’t stop there…
Join us after the walk for a Party in the Park - with music, food, drink, fun, and games for all ages. Then, as evening falls, keep the energy going with a special night of live music at The Great Mountain Community and Sports Club.
