GUTS - presented by MauveTaupe

MauveTaupe is a dance duet project between Nashville based artists Spencer Grady and Phylicia Roybal. This dynamic pairing cultivates atmospheres where movement expresses the depths of their individual and shared identities. The artists are queer, multicultural, have roots in distinct somatic practices, yet have a striking difference in body composition; all coming together to create a unique artistic voice. Creating work since 2022, MauveTaupe continues to hone their ability to establish evocative worlds and pull their audiences into their transcendent performance experiences. The creative process incorporates impactful set design, varying global soundtracks, and imagery inspired improvisation to support their theatrical concepts.

GUTS will feature all of these elements. This evening-length multi-media performance, in development since fall 2024, displays radical set design, a cutting edge underground soundtrack, and dynamic physicality. The set design transports the audience into a scene of decaying human-made structures being consumed by the natural world. Dark ambient noise evolves into cutting-edge underground beats that guide the performers through their experience. The movement vocabulary oscillates between meditative movement phrase work and explosive physical partnering that demonstrates the rigid dichotomy of the peace and war that exists in our bodies and our world. Two characters demonstrate resilience and grit to process themes of grief, heartbreak, and identity.
