A fascinating history tour up Wimbledon Hill to find out how a small village outside London became a household name
About this Event

What this tour is about:
Much more than the tennis, ace service which you will LOVE... the Wonderful Wimbledon Guided Walk
Join us on this fascinating guided walk, up the hill to Wimbledon Village to find out about Wimbledon’s fair share of action; it's much more than the tennis, with gun fights and duels, stagecoaches and hangings, old Georgian pubs and highwaymen chases.
The manor of Wimbledon was owned by prominent people throughout English history, Thomas Cromwell, Catherine Par, Mary I, Cardinal Reginald Pole, the Cecil family, Sarah Churchill and the first Earl Spencer.
And there’s weird history on the way: the man who deliberately set fire to a house with the king and queen in it and got away with it; bizarre tennis matches like the man who asked for champagne (it helped his power, but apparently he fell over every time he tried to turn).

And of course we’ll cover the history of the most famous, oldest, tennis tournament in the world from a sport derived from an eight-page instruction booklet, invented by a Welshman, which was Lawn tennis.

This two and a half hour guided starts outside Wimbledon train station and ends in Wimbledon Village a short walk from the tennis. Rain or shine, there’ll be no rain delays to this tour.

Who's the tour guide?
I'm Loona Hazarika of Let's Discover London and I have guided thousands of people around my birthplace London since 2006. I went to school in Wimbledon so know this place very well.
I have appeared on national BBC and SKY TV documentaries as a historian and guide and was trained as an official tour guide for the British Museum where I gave tours for 5 years. I'm a regular speaker for several online platforms and have a Masters degree from the University of Cambridge.
For my other guided walks please see my Eventbrite collection here How to join the guided walk:
Book your tickets here.
I'll email you with the exact details of the meeting place well in advance of the tour and how to spot me. I will also email you my phone number and you're welcome to call/ whatsapp or SMS if you have any questions.FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:What's the tour like?
I write all my own tours so get ready for some new stuff! I don't assume any prior knowledge of history and the tour is suitable for locals or tourists, adults and children. There'll be time for questions and conversation, I'll show you pictures and tell you lots of stories to really make the tour come to life.
Will the tour go ahead if there is bad weather?Yes it will. Please wear appropriate clothing. How many people will be in the group?
I have a maximum of 12 people so that you have a better experience. Can I cancel my ticket?
Yes. If you cancel a week in advance you can get a 100% refund. What if I am late?
I prefer it if you arrive ten minutes earlier than start so that we can chat.Once the tour starts it's very hard for me to answer the phone.
Please visit the Transport for London website to plan your travel to the start of the tour and find out about any travel issues.
For details of my other tours, and reviews see my website Let's Discover London.
REVIEWS:
“A first class tour guide, an excellent group facilitator and a charming person. He is inspiring, enthusiastic and with endless historical knowledge – which makes me hungry for more. We covered past history (oh so colourful…talking about the inspiration and resilience of people) and right up to the present day….Loona had a story for everything.I won’t spoil it for you by sharing too much ..just to say it really gave me an insight and food for thought.”
Sue Goldstein

“From my experience Loona’s tours are head and shoulders above other tours. I will definitely be going on more tours with him and am going to enquire about a tailor made tour with him too.”
Julie Bennett, tour guide
