About this Event
Led by Robert McGowan, a local writer and researcher, the walk will take in some of the town’s rare and magnificent elm trees and tell the story of their planting by Victorian planners and their unlikely survival along the East Sussex coast – most of the nation’s elms were decimated by Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s.
We will stroll at a gentle pace through Meads via the Royal Eastbourne Golf Course, to Summerdown and Old Town before returning to the Towner via Gildredge Park.
We will also look at the shocking impact that Dutch Elm Disease is now having on Eastbourne's population of elms, and what Treebourne is doing to fight back against the disease.
Meet outside the Towner Gallery, College Road, Eastbourne, BN21 4JJ
Please arrive early, as the walk will set off at 14:30. Approx time 1h 45m to 2h. The walk will return to the Towner Gallery to finish. Refreshments and toilets are available at the gallery. Note there are no toilets for the first 80-90 minutes of the route.
The route is undulating, with some gentle uphill sections, and mainly on pavements but with some sections on grass and footpaths, and some stairs. We regret that it is not suitable for wheelchairs or for those with impaired mobility.
Please book a free ticket. Limited to 25 people.
