GSE 2026 Annual General Meeting

Date & Time: Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Location: The Derrick Golf and Winter Club (Jasper Room), 3500 119 St NW, Edmonton.

Parking: Free parking on site.

Format: Registration 5:00 PM; Dinner 6:00 PM, AGM Business and Presentation 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

· Students: $20

· CGS/GSE Members: $40

· Non-GSE Members: $50

Note: Your preference for dinner entrees is needed. Two option for the entrées available; both come with salad and dessert courses. Salad will be a Market Salad, balsamic vinaigrette, artisan greens, heirloom grape tomato, Peruvian cucumbers, carrots, ninja radish, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries. Dessert will be a New York Cheesecake, sweet cherry compote & chocolate sauce. If substitutions are required due to dietary restrictions, please advise in the Dietary Restrictions section.

Presentation Topic:

Dealing with Geologic Uncertainty in Geotechnical Engineering Practice - The Agony and The Ecstasy.

Presenter Bio:

Pete is a graduate from the geotechnical program at the U of A, where he obtained an MSc. in 1986. He has been working as a consulting engineer since then on a wide range of geotechnical projects, mainly in the mining, pipeline and transportation industries. The application of geotechnical engineering to the pipeline industry has been a particular area of focus in the past several years, including trenchless crossings, slope stability and geohazards. He is currently a Principal Engineer and Director with BGC Engineering, working out of their Edmonton office, on projects in Canada, the US, South America, Europe and Australia.

Presentation Abstract:

Determining the appropriate level of investigation in geotechnical engineering projects is an enduring challenge and can be highly variable from one project to another. Investigation can be expensive and time consuming, but the risks associated with a flawed geologic model can, at times,dwarf any upfront savings on investigation. Pete will share observations and reflections from four decades of geotechnical practice and touch on a series of case histories that highlight this challenge and underscore the importance of “getting the geology right”.
