Growing Conversation - Inside the Herbarium | Tu Mewn i’r Herbariwm
Schedule

National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, SA32 8HN Carmarthen, United Kingdom | Carmarthen, WA
Join our Science Engagement Officer, El James, for an insight into the Garden’s Herbarium and the Heritage Lottery Fund–funded digitisation project that is exploring and cataloguing these historic pressed plant specimens.
Over the past 18 months, 26,000 of 30,000 specimens have been checked and given barcodes, but there is still plenty of work to do to make the collection accessible online.
Alongside the digitisation effort, the project has aimed to inspire public and community engagement with herbaria. One group that has gone above and beyond is the Garden’s own Stitching Botanical volunteer group. Drawing inspiration from the historical herbarium collection, the group has created a unique stitched herbarium focusing on some of Wales’s most threatened and vulnerable native flora.
We will be joined by Sue Quirk, from Stitching Botanical, who will showcase this remarkable final piece and invite discussion about the creative process and the plants it represents.
Each session includes a warm, seasonal lunch, making this the perfect opportunity to nourish both mind and body while connecting with fellow plant and nature enthusiasts in the beautiful surroundings of the garden.

Ymunwch â ni am sgwrs ysbrydoledig ganol dydd yng Ngardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol Cymru, lle mae creadigrwydd, chwilfrydedd a’r byd naturiol yn dod at ei gilydd.
Ymunwch â’n Swyddog Ymgysylltu â Gwyddoniaeth, El James, i gael cipolwg ar Herbariwm yr Ardd a’r prosiect digideiddio a ariennir gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri sy’n archwilio ac yn catalogio’r sbesimenau planhigion hanesyddol hyn a wasgwyd.
Dros y 18 mis diwethaf, mae 26,000 o 30,000 o sbesimenau wedi’u gwirio a rhoddwyd codau bar iddynt, ond mae digon o waith i’w wneud o hyd i wneud y casgliad yn hygyrch ar-lein.
Ochr yn ochr â’r ymdrech digideiddio, mae’r prosiect wedi anelu at ysbrydoli ymgysylltiad y cyhoedd a’r gymuned â herbariwm. Un grŵp sydd wedi mynd y tu hwnt i’r disgwyl yw grŵp gwirfoddol Pwytho Botanegol yr Ardd ei hun. Gan dynnu ysbrydoliaeth o gasgliad yr herbariwm hanesyddol, mae’r grŵp wedi creu herbariwm gwnïo unigryw sy’n canolbwyntio ar rai o fflora brodorol mwyaf dan fygythiad a bregus Cymru.
Bydd Sue Quirk, o Pwytho Botanegol, yn ymuno â ni, a fydd yn arddangos y darn terfynol rhyfeddol hwn ac yn gwahodd trafodaeth am y broses greadigol a’r planhigion y mae’n eu cynrychioli.
Mae pob sesiwn yn cynnwys cinio cynnes, tymhorol, gan wneud hwn yn gyfle perffaith i feithrin y meddwl a’r corff wrth gysylltu â phobl sy’n frwdfrydig dros blanhigion a natur yng nghyffiniau prydferth yr ardd.
