Greater Manchester Letter on “Your Party”

On Saturday 13 September over 100,000 people marched on a far-right, racist, demonstration called by Tommy Robinson. This is an alarm bell for everyone on the left and in the trade union movement. As Starmer’s Labour government continues to support austerity, genocide in Palestine and the scapegoating of refugees and immigrants, the left urgently needs to build a confident, radical movement.

We, supporters of “Your Party”, in Greater Manchester, are dismayed by the public infighting seen between leading figures in the new political project. We know that over 800,000 people have signed up to be part of building a new left party. This infighting will only help our political enemies and undermine confidence in our ability to organise against the right and against Labour’s anti-working class politics.

Our vision is for a new political party that challenges divisions in society – stands up for those who are under attack, such as refugees, immigrants, trans+ people, Muslims and disabled people, and stands against the billionaires. It must be a party that fights in elections and challenges the lies of the right, but also encourages people to take to the streets – whether that’s for Palestine, LGBT+ rights, for our NHS and public services, or against racism and war.

We call upon both sides in the leadership of Your Party to come together to create a party based on democracy and solidarity.

We accept that there will be differences within Your Party. These must be resolved through a process of open democratic debate at all levels in the organisation which every member can be part of, and can accept, even when they are in a minority.

To do so we need to empower local Your Party groups. This means allowing them to be part of a democratic process that selects delegates to the founding conference. It also means giving local groups the tools to begin mobilising and organising on the ground.
