About this Event

Great Irish Famine Commemoration 2026

Come together for the Great Irish Famine Commemoration 2026, and celebrate Irish heritage!

This free event is to remember and honour Ireland's past and the times of the Great Famine, an Gorta Mor, acknowledging its influence on Australia through the arrival of thousands from Ireland as a consequence. Sensational Guest Speaker is Dr Anne Casey, with music and song by McMolly including harpist Cliona Molins, and others. Flowers can be laid at the memorial wall during the commemoration. This is a heartfelt gathering to reflect on and celebrate Irish and Australian history, to connect with ancestors, including the 4114 Irish Orphan Girls of the Earl Grey Scheme, many of whom were first housed in the Hyde Park Barracks before their employment. Explore the barracks and then join in the gathering afterwards at PJ O'Briens, 57 King Street, a short walk away, where food and drinks will be available for purchase, and a free tea/coffee available. Don't miss this wonderful time to celebrate Irish ancestors, connect with others, and keep history alive! We would love to see you there!
